Resolving 'This is not a PowerPoint Presentation' Error in PowerPoint 2003

Unexpected behavior of a specific PowerPoint presentation usually indicates corruption in the file. To deal with such problems, a PowerPoint user requires either to restore from the backup or to apply some powerpoint recovery measures.

Let's exemplify such problems with the following illustration. A user uses PowerPoint 2003 to create the presentation files. But when it tries to open one particular presentation, the file doesn't open. Additionally, an error pops up that reads as below:

“This is not a PowerPoint Presentation.”

Consequently, user cannot access the data that is stored in its presentation.

Cause:
If the above behavior is limited to one and not all of the presentations, the particular presentation is corrupted.
Solution:
To resolve corruption issues with PowerPoint presentation and to extract the data, following are some measures:

Check if you can open the corrupted presentation. If you can, try the below solutions:Create a new presentation and paste the slides from corrupted presentation to it
  • Try to insert the slides of damaged presentation into a newly created presentation and then apply the original one as template
  • Try to save the damaged presentation in RTF format. The method proves successful if corruption is present in the whole presentation
In case you cannot open the presentation at all, use the below mentioned tricks:
  • Locate the PowerPoint 2003 program file at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11 and drag your corrupted presentation to this file icon
  • Try to open the file in Windows Explorer and/or PowerPoint Viewer
  • Create a new presentation and paste the slides from corrupted presentation to it
  • Locate and open the associated temporary file
  • Try to move and the open the damaged presentation on another computer or disk
The above solutions can work when corruption rate is not too high. So in cases when you cannot retrieve data using the methods described above, it is suggested to restore from the backup or recreate the presentation. In case both of the methods are not feasible, you can use a third-party ppt repair solution. Also termed as PPT Recovery utilities, these software use an effective set of procedures that prove highly competent to restore data from a corrupted presentation.
