Release of Windows 7 was being looked forward to by most of the Windows users. And soon after it was released, it instantly became a hit with most of the people. And coupled with MS Office 2007 Suite, it soon became a highly competitive combination. But does that mean it is an unbeatable combination. Does this solve the occasional file corruption or damage problem. Does this mean that the business presentation and marketing people will not have to search for powerpoint recovery measures. Will they not need to recover ppt files.
Recently, my friend installed Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 2007 Suite along with all the latest updates. But on trying to open a presentation created using Office 2003, she got the following error:
'PowerPoint cannot open the type of file represented by file_name.ppt'
On clicking the help button displayed below, following information flashes:
The selected file does not appear to be a valid Microsoft Office PowerPoint file. It might be another kind of Microsoft Office System file or a file created by using a different program.
Try double-clicking the file in Windows Explorer to see if another program will open it. If PowerPoint opens again when you double-click the file in Windows Explorer, it is possible that the file is not a PowerPoint file but that its extension was renamed to be that of a registered PowerPoint file type (such as .ppt, .pptx, .pps, .ppsx, .pptx, .pot, or .potx) but the file is not a PowerPoint file.
To determine which program can open the file, try any of the following:
Contact the original author (if known) to find out which program was used to create this file. Then rename the file with the correct extension so that it can be opened by that program.
Try opening the file in other programs.
If you, or someone you know, are very knowledgeable about software, examine the file header in a text editor to determine which program can read the file.
Another possibility is that the file was damaged during transfer from another computer. If the file was transmitted over a modem, try re-transmitting the file.
Lastly, the file might have become corrupted. If you have a backup copy of the file, use it. It is not currently possible to reverse file corruption.
Such a situation occurs when the presentation is damaged. First ensure that the problem is with the file in question. This can be done by trying to open the file on another computer, and by opening another presentation on your computer.
Considering you zeroed in and found that the problem is with your file only, then you need to restart your computer in Safe mode and try to open your file. If the presentation opens, it means that a system conflict was preventing the file from opening. If it doesn't help, follow the steps mentioned underneath:
•Drag the presentation to PowerPoint 2007 program file icon.
•Open Windows Explorer, and in the application double-click the presentation icon.
•Another way is to create a new presentation, and insert slides into the presentation.
•Open the temporary file 'file_name.tmp' of the presentation, and rename it as 'file_name.ppt' by simply replacing .tmp by .ppt.
•Another way is to try and open it in PowerPoint Viewer 2007.
•Create a copy of the damaged file. It might open and work properly.
•Try to run ScanDisk on your computer. If the presentation is cross-linked, then this utility will be able to repair the presentation.
•These steps should be able to recover PowerPoint files. If they fail, then you'll need to use the most updated backup to recover ppt file.
•In case you do not have a backup, then you'll need to perform ppt repair using PowerPoint Recovery Software.
